Kendrick Lamar Drops “The Blacker The Berry”

Lets be honest. Kendrick Lamar is hip hop. Good Kid, M.A.A.D City proved that beyond a doubt. Executive Produced by Dr.Dre, it was the outcome of his 1st album Section .80 (released digitally by Indie label T.D.E.). In 2013 it went platinum and in 2014 it earned 7 Grammy Nominations. Pretty hard to top…

Fast forward to 2015. Kendrick releases a much anticipated new track “I” from a new project. The result, 2 Grammy’s and mixed reviews by fans and self proclaimed internet critics. Judged by it’s self motivating theme and Isley Brother inspired instrumental, it was a softer side of Kendrick crafted to motivate the people. Rewarded for it’s meaning and artistry, “I” was well received, but not quite what Good Kid, M.A.A.D City fans expected. Enter “The Blacker The Berry”.

Boi-1da sequenced drums and dark synths take Kendrick out of the radio friendly zone and back to the mud. Armed with premium production and a heavy heart, he rises to the occasion and speaks directly about race and the state of America. It has a welcomed grittiness, and maybe exactly what rap needs to be taken seriously again. Fresh after a Grammy win, it couldn’t have come sooner for those itching for a dose of the future.
